Graphic & Disturbing

Alligators attack and kill multiple human characters on screen throughout the film — this is the central threat and occurs repeatedly from beginning to end.
Officer Wayne is attacked and killed by alligators in a scene that is shown clearly enough to be identified as a death scene, referenced specifically as one of the film's key moments.
Dave Kaller is found by Haley bleeding and seriously injured in the flooded crawl space — his injury and deteriorating condition are an ongoing presence in the film.
Haley kills one of the alligators during an escape sequence, depicting a human fighting back against the predators.
Multiple sustained chase-and-attack sequences show characters swimming through floodwaters and being pursued by alligators — the overall tone is relentless and threatening with no extended relief between attacks.
No firearms or conventional weapons are the primary threat — the violence is driven by animal predator attacks, making it visceral and unpredictable in nature.

Deeply Disturbing

The discovery of alligators in the flooded crawl space beneath the family home is rated as the film's most disturbing scare — the confined, dark, rising-water environment makes this scene deeply unsettling.
Officer Wayne's death attack by alligators is identified as a genuinely scary scene — a character the audience follows is killed by the predators on screen.
Multiple alligator attacks during swimming sequences provide sustained intense threat — characters are in open water with the predators throughout.
Haley performing CPR on her unresponsive father after he nearly drowns is a frightening emotional scene layered on top of the physical danger.
The entire central premise — being trapped in a flooding house with alligators as a hurricane escalates — generates a prolonged tense atmosphere that does not let up.
The film's scary scenes are resolved ultimately through survival and helicopter rescue, but several named characters do not survive, and resolution does not reduce the impact of what precedes it.

Overwhelming

The film is relentlessly paced with very little downtime — the Category 5 hurricane flood sequence combined with multiple simultaneous alligator attacks is rated as overwhelming and is the film's climactic set piece.
The escape sequence from the crawl space to the roof and the sequences of swimming through alligator-infested floodwaters are both rated as intense — rapid threat escalation, confined spaces, rising water, and predator movement create a sustained sensory assault.
This film is not suitable for sensory-sensitive children or those who find sustained tension distressing — the threat is relentless and the setting claustrophobic throughout most of the runtime.
Even teenagers comfortable with action films may find the pacing and unrelenting nature of the survival sequences exhausting or overwhelming.

Crawl — Heads Up for Parents

Despite being marketed primarily as a creature-action thriller, the scene in which Haley performs CPR on her unresponsive father — a person she has just reconciled with after emotional estrangement — is genuinely upsetting and may hit harder emotionally than parents expecting a straightforward monster movie will anticipate.

About Crawl

Crawl is a 2019 survival horror thriller in which college swimmer Haley Keller races into a Category 5 hurricane to find her father Dave, only to discover him gravely injured and trapped in the flooded crawl space of their family home — alongside a nest of enormous alligators. The film is a relentless, claustrophobic survival story about a daughter fighting to rescue her father while the floodwaters and predators close in from every direction.

👨‍👧

Best watched together

The graphic alligator attacks, the death of Officer Wayne shown on screen, and the sustained horror of being trapped in a flooding house make this unsuitable for under-16s watching alone — older teenagers who choose to watch it will benefit from a parent being available to decompress the more intense sequences and the underlying family-estrangement themes.

Family Takeaways from Crawl

What it gets right

✓The father-daughter relationship is the emotional core of the film — their reconciliation on the roof, where Dave reveals he kept the house for the family memories, gives the survival story genuine emotional weight beyond the action.
✓The film portrays physical courage and mental resilience as learnable qualities — Haley's swimming training is directly credited for her survival, sending a positive message about the value of discipline and not giving up on your potential.
