Graphic & Disturbing
  • The werechicken attacks chickens in a pen, causing them to flap and squawk in terror — played for comedic effect with no graphic injury shown.
  • The werechicken bites Maude, infecting her and triggering her transformation into a chicken — the bite itself is the inciting violent act of the film.
  • The Ghostbusters fire proton streams at the werechicken inside a barn, suspending it in crackling energy — action-style peril with sci-fi weapons rather than physical combat.
  • A baby werechicken bites Egon on the rear end and scratches him — brief and played entirely for laughs.
  • A giant werechicken destroys cars in a supermarket parking lot and climbs the Empire State Building, knocking over street lamps and power poles — large-scale property destruction with no human casualties depicted.
  • The climactic battle involves proton streams and a ghost trap firing simultaneously, producing sparks and lightning-style energy effects.
  • No characters are killed and no blood is shown; all violence is either cartoon slapstick or sci-fi action peril with an overall comedic tone.

  • Characters say 'da**' or 'dang' twice and 'hell' twice — the only profanity in the film.
  • No moderate, strong, or extreme profanity of any kind — no a**, b**ch, s**t, or f-words detected.
  • Language is entirely appropriate for family viewing and well within what most children will have already heard.

Deeply Disturbing
  • The werechicken emerges from shadows with glowing red eyes and a fanged beak, releasing a shriek — a deliberate jump-scare moment that will startle younger viewers.
  • Maude's transformation into a chicken is shown with her body parts changing grotesquely on screen — the most visually unsettling scene in the film and the one most likely to disturb sensitive children.
  • Egon-Chicken jumps out from behind a lab door with a growl and visible fangs — another quick startle moment.
  • A baby werechicken bursts from an oven with snarling and cackling — sudden and loud, played partly for comedy but still startling.
  • The giant werechicken is revealed to be building-sized and begins climbing the Empire State Building — an escalating threat moment that may frighten children who have been unnerved by earlier scenes.
  • Scary scenes are ultimately resolved with humour and Ghostbusters ingenuity — the team uses a weather balloon to freeze the creature, and the film ends with a comedic false alarm set to James Brown music.

  • Slimer gives Egon a big, sloppy, enthusiastic kiss when Egon is restored to normal — played entirely for comedy between a ghost and a team member.
  • No romantic relationships, human kissing, sexual content, or innuendo of any kind are depicted.
  • Romance is effectively a non-factor in this film.

  • No alcohol, drugs, or tobacco are shown, consumed, or referenced anywhere in the film.

Overwhelming
  • The climactic battle at the Empire State Building features multiple proton streams firing simultaneously, trap activation, and storm effects — rapid, loud, and visually busy, making it the most overwhelming sequence in the film.
  • Chase sequences with Ecto-1 and Ecto-2 pursuing the werechicken through city streets are fast-paced and energising with sustained action.
  • The werechicken egg hatching and releasing a baby werechicken in a kitchen is a sudden, chaotic sequence combining surprise, noise, and creature action.
  • The film's pacing alternates between comic dialogue and bursts of high-energy action — sensory-sensitive children under 7 may find the louder sequences difficult to manage.

Ghostbusters — Heads Up for Parents

Maude's on-screen transformation — with body parts visibly and grotesquely changing into chicken form — is significantly more unsettling than the rest of the film's comedic tone suggests, and may catch parents off guard who expect the creature content to stay consistently cartoonish throughout.

About Ghostbusters

The Ghostbusters are called to a farm where a werechicken has bitten a woman named Maude, transforming her into a chicken, and has also infected team member Egon. The team must race through New York City to stop the creature before it grows to building size and scales the Empire State Building. The tone is comedic and action-packed, blending monster-movie parody with slapstick humour and classic Ghostbusters teamwork.

Best watched together
Children under 10 will benefit from a parent nearby for Maude's grotesque transformation sequence and the building-sized werechicken reveal at the Empire State Building — both are genuine scare moments in an otherwise playful film, and a parent can help reframe the tone and reassure younger viewers in the moment.

Family Takeaways from Ghostbusters

What it gets right

  • ✓Egon's transformation is handled with team solidarity rather than fear or rejection — Peter comforting Egon and the whole group working to create an antidote shows children that friends support each other through frightening circumstances.
  • ✓The film wraps its monster-movie threat in consistent humour, including Slimer's comedic false alarm set to James Brown music, ensuring the scary moments never linger and the overall experience feels fun rather than traumatic.
