The Outsiders — Heads Up for Parents

Despite its literary reputation as a school-assigned novel, the film includes a fatal stabbing, a character being shot dead by police, and a slow, emotional hospital death scene for Johnny — heavier content than many parents may expect from a story often taught in middle school.

About The Outsiders

Set in 1960s Oklahoma, 'The Outsiders' follows Ponyboy Curtis and his working-class 'Greaser' friends as they navigate a violent rivalry with the wealthier 'Soc' gang. After Johnny kills a Soc boy in self-defense, the two boys go on the run, eventually finding redemption through a heroic act before tragedy strikes. It's a coming-of-age drama with real emotional weight, exploring class conflict, loyalty, and loss.

Best watched together
The film's themes of gang violence, death, and social prejudice — including Johnny's death in the hospital and Dallas being shot by police — are emotionally heavy, and younger teens (13-14) will benefit from a parent present to discuss the consequences of violence and class conflict.
